Established in Atlanta, Georgia by Afro-Latina ceramicist Aleisha Duchateau. Operating as a one-woman studio, Aleisha blends organic textures and glazes, often featuring distinctive satin rock-like surfaces in earthy tones with occasional vibrant colors. Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi and the playful nature of 18th-century European splatterware, her handmade pieces are designed for everyday use, serving as a grounding artistic presence in a naturally tangible world.
From a Hobby to Business
In 2019, Utility Objects demonstrated a profound commitment to social justice by producing black tumblers and donating all proceeds to Color of Change, an organization combating racial injustice during the height of the Black Lives Matter movement. This marked a pivotal moment for Aleisha's practice which was shared on social media screens of large retail buyers thus leading to significant partnerships with high-end boutiques, galleries, design firms, and major retailers such as West Elm, Nordstrom, and Food52.
The brand has also received notable press coverage, with features in publications such as Dwell Magazine, The New Yorker, Architectural Digest, Ceramic Review Magazine, and Southern Living.
