Sterling Silver Composition:

Sterling silver, often marked as "925," is made of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, primarily copper, to increase its durability and strength. 

Chemical Reaction:

The copper in the silver alloy reacts with moisture, oils, and acids on your skin, leading to oxidation and the formation of copper salts. 

Green Discoloration:

These copper salts can then rub off on your skin, causing a green or black discoloration. 

Harmless:

This green discoloration is a cosmetic issue and is not a health hazard. 

Prevention:

To minimize the chances of green discoloration, you can: 

    ◦    Keep jewelry clean and dry: Remove jewelry before swimming, exercising, or washing hands. 

    ◦    Clean regularly: Wipe down your sterling silver with a soft cloth to remove oils, dirt, and sweat. 

    ◦    Apply a barrier: A thin coat of clear nail polish on the inside of rings can create a barrier between the metal and your skin. 

    ◦    Storage: keep silver in a dry, tarnish-resistant environment
